Everything we experience is shaped by an inner frame of reference, our thoughts, beliefs, the inner world we hold.
For example, we exist inside a body, that’s how it feels to us.
We experience ourselves inside our stories, inside our beliefs and perceptions, and inside our customs, traditions, race, conditioning, or culture. Also, inside an abundant or an impoverished life.
The same is true for our failures and accomplishments; we become them until change happens, and then we become something else.
We find ourselves too inside our choices, inside the experience of our decisions, and then there are addictions or routine habits and the feeling of being trapped inside those.
We experience ourselves inside our thoughts as well as they appear inside of us, inside our heads, inside our minds. That’s how it feels anyway.
Our bodies and lives begin to reflect our inner world, our beliefs, habits, self-talk, and self-image.
But importantly, all these occurrences and experiences appear inside a conscious awareness of them, and to this, there are no exceptions.
Even when we sleep we’ve created something to be inside of, our dreams. Dreams we are also aware of.
We constantly move from one inside to another, looking for fulfilment, self-worth, freedom, peace, love, happiness, all sought within the confinement of these ‘insides’.
We’re constantly in a state of flux, creating new insides or adjusting old ones as we go, and this can happen literally in a finger snap, one moment we are this, and in another moment, that.
As for reality then, it’s purely subjective; modifiable, shifting, changing, ever moving in relation to these ‘insides’.
For some though, their subjective reality can be a painful journey, struggling with a sense of being lost, estranged, or not belonging, while others are desperate to find freedom from a feeling of imprisonment or entrapment which can sometimes consume an entire lifetime, especially if their self-perception has been shaped by pain, harsh self-judgement, or experiences that left deep emotional imprints.
And then of course, we are inside the houses, the neighbourhoods, and the cities we’ve created for ourselves, inside too the ecological environment of our planet that we’ve damaged and continue to damage. And we are now on the receiving end of those choices in our conscious awareness, as we experience the consequences of them.
We are living within the consequences of our carelessness, our treatment of the earth, other species, and each other. Something we cannot escape or ignore.
We’re always creating something to be inside of, even while we’re sleeping. Our experiences consistently feel as if we exist inside of them, inside the thoughts, ideas, beliefs and environments that we create. We’re always somewhat aware of these insides, even if only through the effect or consequence of them. And we’re always creating something inside of something else, beginning generally with ‘I’m human, my name is…’ and then whatever comes after, an ever-shifting foundation that defines the somebody we’ve made ourselves into. Each a nested container, one inside the other, like Russian Matryoshka dolls.
But we also exist inside the Universe. A fact mostly overlooked as we go about our daily lives, a universe which interestingly and clearly, is our primary container. This raises an intriguing question: could it be that we’re a more fundamental part of this universe than we yet understand?
And just as fascinating, perhaps as a thought experiment, what might happen if we just stepped out of all those little Matryoshka dolls we create for ourselves?
Where might we end up…?
Who or what might we become then…?
The conscious awareness of what exactly?
Would we perhaps find something greater and more profound in ourselves; would we discover the compassion and care for this earth and all living things that we now so desperately need to become?
Just food for thought.
