Every feeling, emotion, or state you experience isn’t just yours. You are also influenced by our field of shared consciousness. Think of these fields as bubbles or atmospheres that arise as a consequence of our collective focus and attention. Whenever large numbers of people engage in a particular activity, belief, or emotion, that collective atmosphere becomes stronger, more palpable, and we are all affected by it.
These are dynamic environments, constantly shifting, surging, and subsiding as people move into and out of them. That’s why we experience full moons differently from other moon phases, why large global events affect us collectively, and why there is stillness in a time zone that sleeps.
Take fear, for example. Because so many are focused on it, the collective field of fear is pervasive and potent. When you think fearful thoughts, you’re tuning your awareness into that collective field, like stepping into a vast pool already flowing all around you. The more people in that pool, the larger and stronger its collective influence becomes.
Yes, our bodies have their own innate compulsions and emotions, but these are amplified by the collective impulses and emotions of humanity’s wider group consciousness.
Equally, there is love, a vast pool of unconditional love and compassion that is always available to each of us. Love too exists within our collective field, strengthened by everyone who chooses to live in love, to focus on love, and to embody love. The more people who dwell within that field, the more love there is for everyone, and the easier it becomes for others to rest in love’s healing presence.
Here’s the key point: emotional states are not personal. They aren’t fixed aspects of a ‘personal you.’ The easiest way to imagine them is as rooms within a vast house. When you step into one room, the atmosphere of that space defines your experience, the colours, scents, sensations in that room become a temporary reality.
Some spend their entire lives in one room, perhaps the room of greed, or of desire, simply because it has become familiar. Others may remain in the room of depression or existential anxiety, feeling as if the doorway out has vanished altogether.
And it’s important to know that this isn’t a personal flaw or a permanent condition, as it is so often perceived. But it is real, and sometimes finding the doorway out requires support, a kind practitioner, time in nature, healing practices, or professional help. There is no shame in that.
You can walk into the room of fear and feel overwhelmed by it. You can step into the room of love and rest in its peace and openness.
And just as you are free to come and go from rooms in an actual house, you are also free to leave any emotional environment. You’re not permanently trapped in fear, anxiety, or desire. You can choose to move your awareness toward a different state, and in recognising this, you’ll find freedom from the illusion of being stuck.
To shift from one emotional state to another, redirect your attention. Where your focus goes, your experience follows.
But please know: the longer you’ve spent in a particular experience, such as existential anxiety, the more deeply embodied that state becomes, even at a cellular level. This isn’t an obstacle; it just means you’ll need patience, kindness, and sometimes support to sustain a new focus.
Be gentle with yourself in this process. Your personal story may be deeply embedded, and the collective story of our humanity runs deeper still.
Once you understand that none of this is personal, self-love becomes much easier to allow in. Life feels lighter. Emotions lose their grip. You stop taking everything so seriously, and you stop judging yourself harshly. When you understand that emotions and desires are shared atmospheres that we all contribute to and receive from, you feel freer and more empowered.
Every emotion, every impulse, every energy moving within you is impersonal. None can define who you are. They are simply waves that rise and fall within the vast ocean of awareness that notices them.
You are not the storm clouds. You are the sky that holds them, unchanged by their coming and going.
Rest in this understanding. Not because nothing about you ever needed attention or care, but because beneath everything you have experienced, there is something in you that has never been damaged. Something whole. Something that has been here all along.
You are magnificent beyond words, just as you are. And this is how we begin to solve all our world’s problems: by each of us shifting our focus toward love, by pouring that love into ourselves and collectively into the world. The more who live from love and compassion, the more there is for everyone and for all living things on Earth.
If enough of us choose it now, love becomes the organising principle behind how we live. And that’s the world we will all come home to.
