Just as we respond each moment to the environment and to life, the environment and life responds back to us too. It’s a relationship that is synergistic, cooperative, and reciprocal; evidence of this is everywhere you look.
The natural world is so beautiful, abundant, thriving, and alive because of this giving-and-receiving symbiosis. Each living thing gives all that it has to everything else, and everything else gives all that it has to each living thing. This is the conversation of life.
We see this too when humans give all they have to the world, those who devote their time and lives to creating unique human interfaces with our natural environment. Examples include national parks, botanical gardens and recreation areas, community gardens and our own gardens at home, sculpted natural environments that also co-exist in symbiosis with us.
We also see it in the restoration and rewilding of damaged or depleted landscapes we’ve neglected, as well as in the rescuing and rehabilitation of abused, abandoned animals.
And we feel this as well when we meet the eyes and energy of a barista making our coffee with love for example, or a checkout operator, or front desk manager, or a health professional who truly cares about us, about our experience, about our momentary interaction with them in their service and support. They are genuinely alive, vibrant, and kind, leaving us feeling warm and nourished by their presence.
But this conversation breaks down when humans act only for themselves. Disconnected from this natural reciprocity, they try to fill an inner void by endlessly taking rather than giving, leaving those around them drained rather than uplifted.
Imagine what the world would be like if most of us lived by that same giving-receiving reciprocity that all living things share in the natural world. Imagine if we applied those principles in all our interactions with our environment, with each other, and if governments and corporations adopted this as their core strategy, as the foundation of every decision, future plan, mission statement, and as a requirement for every manufactured product.
But just as life communicates with life in this way, feeling through the senses, through the calls and sounds echoing across valleys, and by spoken and written words or symbols as we humans use, life also has that deeper, more profound conversation beneath the surface. It’s an unspoken silence at the consciousness level, where we are all deeply, inseparably connected to each other and to everything else.
That barista who shines her light on us, sharing her joy, love, and gratitude, it’s not just the physical experience of what we observe in her; she also communicates with us at the core of our being, lifting our spirits and filling our hearts. This, too, is happening in our world: an unseen and silent dialogue that leaves nothing out of a conversation at the most fundamental level of existence.
It’s happening between flowers and bees, between soil and trees, and between newly in love couples who can sense each other even across oceans.
Here lies the real engine of transformation. It’s potent, intentional, communicative. It has the capacity to focus, to be wilful and attentive. And the collective expression of it is accumulative, touching everything that exists.
If we each carried this wordless conversation into the world through our kindness, joy, love, and inspiration, our whole world would mirror that conversation back to us.
This is what we mean when we say all the world’s problems can be solved by this. If this was our collective conversation, nothing would be left untouched by it.
Even those among us still caught in patterns of greed and self-interest would begin to feel compassion, slowly but surely touched and transformed by the undercurrent of love in this profound and beautiful phenomenon.
It’s a choice away. Three simple steps. And a vision that grows stronger with every person who chooses to participate.
